    Description

Do you dream of writing fiction but keep staring at a blank screen? Perhaps you have a brilliant idea but don’t know how to turn it into the plot of a great novel. This workshop is designed to support people who are at the early stages of becoming a fiction writer. We want to help you to gain the confidence to put your ideas on paper.Join our comprehensive two-hour workshop where we’ll discuss:* Plotting – how to put together the building blocks of a novel* Writing techniques – do you use Word, iPad, Google Docs, a speech-to-text dictation tool, or perhaps a plotting app for writers?* Finding your perspective – do you write in the first person (I did this) or in the third person (they did that).* The stars and the extras – the basics of how to identify your characters and give them a believable role in your story* Understanding genres – do you fit within any of the defined categories? And what does it mean if you don’t?* The publishing process – a quick look at the stages of publishing a book, and the main routes into print (and why all of them can be great options)* What happens after your novel is in printWho is it for? This is an in person workshop for both new and established authors. You’ll be the sort of person who knows you really want to write fiction but you’ve either tried and got stuck, or you feel overwhelmed by the scale of the task and don’t know where to begin. It’s easy to feel daunted by writing, particularly if this is your first foray into writing novels and short stories. This workshop aims to give you a basic toolkit to help you decide where to go next in a positive and supportive two-hour session. How will it work? This workshop is a simple ticketed event. With a maximum group size of twelve people, this will be the ideal opportunity to ask the questions that matter the most to you.The first focus of the session is to share information with you. The second focus is to provide a rare opportunity to meet a publishing expert in a relaxed and friendly environment where you can discuss the elements of writing which are specifically puzzling you. What are the aims of this workshop?1) Gain confidence that you’re on the right track as a writer2) Join a supportive event where you can ask questions about fiction writing and publishing3) Gain practical guidance on how to turn your ideas into a fabulous read4) Build your confidence about the pathway ahead

Everything that was needed for the workshop (except for a pair of scissors!) was sent well in advance and the finished product was just beautiful. There was plenty of time for each step of the book making and everything was explained very clearly. Would highly recommend."

"This online course was lots of fun. The kit sent out ahead of the course contained everything we needed. Lorna guided us through the whole process in easy to follow steps and was willing to repeat instructions for the tricky knots in a straightforward way until we were successful. I also enjoyed all the interesting comments about the history of the technique we were using. I cant wait to start using my little notebook and am already planning on making some larger sketchbooks with watercolour paper for journaling. Highly recommended!"

Janie reviewed: Book binding - Zoom Saturday Morning Workshop

"Great course. Great teacher. Thank you Lorna for a really lovely, productive and inspiring workshop. A box arrived with everything we needed apart from scissors. Couldn’t have been easier. Just 5 of us on the course and Lorna patiently took us through and explained each stage, weaving in stories of traditional bookbinding methods and her own amazing introduction to the craft. It worked remarkably well on zoom with the camera honing in on different processes and easy to see and understand. Lorna helped anyone who was stuck without making a big deal of it just encouraging and telling stories of her own Challenges on the way. We all created gorgeous notebooks with lovely cloth covers. A real delight. It’s been very inspiring and Lorna generously offers on going support if needed. Really recommend this course and Lorna as a teacher."

Mandy Hetherton reviewed: Book binding - Zoom Saturday Morning Workshop

"Lorna was a great teacher - clear, patient (especially when I just couldn't get my knots right!) and encouraging. The small class size (6) meant that she could help if anyone got stuck. She shared interesting information about the history of bookbinding and her own story of how she got into it as we worked, which added value to the experience. All materials were supplied well in advance and were of high quality.I am delighted with my notebook and would highly recommend this workshop. You don't need to be at all 'arty' or have any experience to come away with a really pleasing result. I was given the workshop as a present, and will definitely gift it to others too. Thank you Lorna!"

"We booked this course for a way of three friends in different places (and countries) to get together and celebrate a special birthday. We all like creative activities and an online book binding course fitted perfectly. I'd seen it had good reviews and I now know why. Lorna was a delightful teacher, prepared, clear and with a clear passion for the topic. She was patient and had useful stories and anecdotes that helped us really enjoy the session. In addition we all came away with beautiful, professional looking hand bound books. Wonderful. Thank you so much Lorna"

"I’m delighted with the beautiful notebook I made on the course. I was lucky enough to do a course in person at the Burford Literary Festival but I’m sure it will work really well on Zoom as you can get a close up of the demonstration more easily. Lorna was so patient and enthusiastic and I learnt not just about bookbinding but lots about independent publishing. A lovely way to spend a couple of hours learning a new craft."

"I did this course over the summer, and have only just discovered how to leave a review! Sorry for the delay Lorna! This was a fantastic morning - the act of creating your own book is so relaxing and rewarding. Lorna was a fantastic guide - I can't really believe she managed to do that all over Zoom. And the book you end up with feels so special, and of such high quality you feel like you'll never buy your own (premade) notebook again! Highly recommended"

"I did this course remotely and was very impressed by how the course was run and Lorna's very friendly and enthusiastic manner which invited the whole group to bond. Lorna took the time to repeat a process if anyone struggled, and was very patient in answering all of our questions. It helped that all the book elements were already pre-cut and prepared for us. I would strongly recommend this course to all bookbinding beginners just to understand some of the basics of bookbinding techniques."
