The Philippines is planning one of the world's biggest buildouts of natural gas infrastructure, with almost two dozen power plants announced and ambitions to become a hub for liquified natural gas for the entire Asia-Pacific region. The coastal province of Batangas alone already has four plants and another four are planned. Authorities say the expanded capacity will help the country's energy needs. But the buildout is raising questions about the health of nearby coral reefs and fishing communities that have been impacted. Energy experts also say that the Philippines could meet its energy needs with cheaper renewables that don't contribute to climate change.
Tornado-spawning storms tearing across the eastern U.S. overnight killed a toddler in Michigan and injured five people in Maryland and eight more in Ohio. The toddler was killed and his mother was injured when a tornado struck suburban Detroit without warning. Officials say the tornado tore through several neighborhoods Wednesday — and there was no advance notice that would have normally led to the activation of warning sirens. Meanwhile, in Maryland, at least five people were injured when a tornado collapsed structures there. And early Thursday, a suspected tornado in Ohio ripped away a gas station canopy and damaged a restaurant and a store. An official says eight people were left with minor injuries, mostly from flying debris.
Officials say a tornado killed a 2-year-old boy and injured his mother when a tree fell on their house in suburban Detroit. Livonia city officials said in a post on the city’s website that the quick-developing tornado struck several neighborhoods in the city on Wednesday afternoon. Officials say a massive tree was uprooted, falling onto the family’s house and through the roof, landing on a bed where the woman and her 2-year-old were sleeping. To the east in Maryland, emergency workers were responding to collapsed structures with people trapped inside after a tornado was spotted in the area during rounds of strong storms Wednesday night.
The season’s first heat wave is already baking the Southwestern U.S. with triple-digit temperatures as Phoenix firefighters employ new tactics in hopes of saving more lives. Maricopa County saw 645 heat-related deaths last year. Starting this season, the Phoenix Fire Department is immersing heatstroke victims in ice on the way to area hospitals. The hospitals have also recently begun adopting the technique as a go-to protocol. The medical technique is known as cold-water immersion. Experts say it can dramatically lower body temperature in minutes. The mercury reached 108 in Phoenix and Las Vegas on Wednesday. Record-highs topping 110 are forecast in both cities on Thursday.
YouTube is changing its rules to protect its youngest users from potentially harmful firearm videos. The video sharing platform owned by Google says that starting later this month it will prohibit videos that demonstrate how to remove firearm safety devices. Videos showing homemade guns, automatic weapons and certain firearm accessories like silencers will be restricted to users 18 and older. Last year, researchers found YouTube was automatically recommending graphic videos of gun violence to young users, despite the platform's own rules which ban gory content. Critics say the new rules won't mean much if they're not effectively enforced by YouTube.
Month after month, global temperatures are breaking records. Meanwhile, scientists and climate policymakers warn of the growing likelihood that the planet will soon exceed the warming limit set in the landmark Paris 2015 climate talks. With temperatures soaring across the world, it can be hard to know what each broken record means for humans. Here’s a look at what scientists are saying about the impacts of the ongoing warming.
The Lebanese military said that its solidiers shot and captured a gunman who attacked the U.S. embassy near Beirut after a shootout that injured an embassy security guard. The attack took place Wednesday as tensions continued to simmer in the tiny Mediterranean country, where months of fighting between Hezbollah militants and Israeli troops has displaced thousands along the border. Local media reported that there was a gunfight involving at least one attacker and lasting almost half an hour. A Lebanese security official and two judicial officials familiar with the case said the gunman appeared to be a lone attacker.
