To make this recipe, I used yukon gold potatoes, but you can use any potatoes you like. I also left the skins on the potatoes, as it gives them a beautiful rustic flavor and texture.

TIPS & TRICKS to make this Recipe: I baked my potatoes for 21 to 22 minutes with the bake and broil option (top + bottom heat). If your oven can´t don both functions at the same time, just bake them for an extra 5 minutes. I also used sunflower oil to fry the potatoes with the batter. But you can use any mild vegetable oil, such as canola oil.

What does beer do to the battered fish? ›

The reason beer is a popular choice for battered fish is because the carbonation in the beer makes for a light, crispy coating. What beer makes the best batter? ›

Most are fair game for beer batter (Pilsner Urquell, Stella Artois, Modelo, and Firestone Pivo Pils are particularly nice), with the exception of Bohemian pilsner, which comes with a heavy dose of spices that can change the overall flavor of your dish. Can Muslims eat beer battered? ›

Do fish and chip shops use beer batter? ›

It's the fish batter used by all the best fish 'n chips shops. Here's what makes beer batter so good: Yeast and carbonation in beer acts like yeast in bread, making the batter go puffy as it cooks so it's thin and light rather than thick and greasy.

What is the difference between beer battered and breaded? ›

Breaded fish is coated in breadcrumbs before being fried, which gives it a crispy and crunchy exterior. The breadcrumbs can be seasoned with herbs, spices, or other flavorings to add extra taste. Battered fish is coated in a mixture of flour, liquid (usually beer or water) and sometimes eggs.

Can I use water instead of beer in batter? ›

To prove this point, we fried fish in batters made with beer, nonalcoholic beer, seltzer, and water and found that all the batches with a carbonated beverage did indeed lead to noticeably lighter, lacier crusts than the batter made with plain water.

Why add vodka to beer batter? ›

The vodka isn't added for flavor; it's added because alcohol evaporates far more easily than water, which helps our beer batter cook much faster in the fryer. This means you get a crisp coating of batter before the fish inside has been overcooked.

Yes. Completely. All the alcohol cooks out in the depp frying process and the remaining malt products are the same malt that all baby foods contain. The flavoring in beer comes from hops.

Why is my beer battered fish not crispy? ›

You might want to add a small amount of baking powder to the mix to improve the bubbles in the batter. The bubbles are what give fried food its crunch, which is why, for most other recipes, adding a carbonated beverage, like beer, makes food crunchy.

Why do you put beer in dough? ›
